2025-2026 Nonprofit Educational Programs Announced with a 2026 Conference Albany, NY — The Hedgeman Law Firm specializes in serving the legal needs of tax-exempt entities in New York, Washington D.C., and Virginia. We are excited to announce the launch of the Nonprofit Law Forum, which builds on the firm’s Nonprofit Law Academy launched in 2022 and includes Nonprofit CEO Roundtable Conversations and a 2026 conference.
Attorney Catherine M. Hedgeman is an expert in nonprofit law and tax with twenty-five years’ experience serving the nonprofit sector. Ms. Hedgeman shared, “With the ever-changing economic times and fundraising landscape, the need remains for continued staff, board, and leadership education while sharing best practices with mission-driven organizations. We are excited to announce the expansion of education and governance training with newly announced Nonprofit Law Academy (NLA) sessions and a one-day Nonprofit Law and Governance conference to be held in New York’s Capital Region in 2026.” The conference is designed to bring together nonprofits for peer-to-peer networking while learning from subject matter experts about governance, advocacy, and laws impacting the work they do. Our firm is also proud to host Nonprofit CEO Roundtable Conversations, where a small group of nonprofit leaders discuss current issues to support one another with solutions. Collectively, we offer these programs to help tax-exempt organizations with cost-effective educational training to benefit the communities served.
The NLA is designed to assist nonprofits in building their legal and operational capacity by educating tax-exempt entities on the legal requirements of state nonprofit law and the Internal Revenue Service code. The NLA consists of six online seminars and written articles, tools, and resources nonprofits can use to expand their legal and operational knowledge to ensure good governance. The NLA provides affordable, accessible and strategic education for nonprofit boards and staff. The upcoming two-hour virtual sessions are held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. The NLA dates and topics include:
- Session 1: October 15 – Risk Management
- Session 2: October 23 – Fundraising
- Session 3: November 13 – Legal aspects of Advocacy/Lobbying
- Session 4: January 22, 2026 – Legal Fiduciary Duties for Board Members
- Session 5: February 12, 2026 – Financial Fiduciary Duties for Board Members
- Session 6: March 19, 2026 – Legal Issues with Volunteerism
Nonprofits strengthen local economy and provide critical support services like healthcare and social assistance to vulnerable populations. According to 2024 data, there are more than 119,000 nonprofit organizations in New York State, with approximately 1.36 million workers. (Source: NYCON). In the Capital Region alone, there are over 7,000 nonprofits with some facing challenges to funding, services, cash flow, and revenue as the donor base has dried up, and corporate citizens have less capital to invest.
